Unlike the operation of typical equipment, a wastewater treatment system must undergo a systematic startup procedure before it can be brought back into normal operation after initial installation or prolonged shutdown. This section outlines the key considerations for system startup and related procedures to guide operators in the proper use of this system.
Unlike the operation of typical equipment, a wastewater treatment system must undergo a systematic startup procedure before it can be brought back into normal operation after initial installation or prolonged shutdown. This section outlines the key considerations for system startup and related procedures, providing guidance to operators on the proper use of this system.
1. Pre-Startup Checks: Before starting the system, operators shall verify the following items:
(1) Have all equipment components been properly lubricated?
(2) Inspect all pipelines and valves to ensure proper connections.
(3) Verify the electrical and water supply systems, and set all switches on the MCC panel to the ON position.
(4) Inspect the chemical agents in the tank.
(5) Check the program timing settings of the PLC.
(6) Refer once again to the report on the standalone test run.
2. The primary step in initiating a biological treatment system is to cultivate and acclimatize a sufficiently abundant microbial population (sludge) so that it can effectively treat the wastewater. Until the sludge has adapted to the wastewater characteristics and its biomass is adequate to degrade the organic pollutants, the effluent quality will typically fail to meet the design discharge standards. Therefore, achieving the required sludge biomass within the shortest possible time becomes the foremost task in starting up the biological treatment system.
Although appropriate bacterial communities can naturally develop and proliferate in wastewater, this process typically requires a considerable amount of time. Therefore, depending on the specific circumstances, either directly inoculating the wastewater with microorganisms or “inoculating” the new system with sludge from another treatment plant are highly effective strategies for significantly shortening the sludge‑maturation period. During the commissioning phase, the influent to the treatment unit often fails to meet design flow rates and quality standards; consequently, sufficient time must be allowed during this period to enable the formation of an adequate biofilm within the system.
